*** Scroll down beyond photo for a translation and explanation of Archie's actual name at baptism***
This is the baptism record (sent to me by Maternity BVM Catholic Church,
in Bourbonnais) for Louis Marcotte and Julia Messier's son, Louis Achilles Marcotte,
baptized on 3 May 1859 at that church.
Achilles was know by his granchildren as Archie. That is because he went by his middle name,
which in French sound like Ah-shill, and which they believed was Archille, versus
Achilles, in which the final s is silent, and the ch is a soft consonant combination
is pronounced like sh. On the 1860 U.S. Census, he appears as Ashiel, age one,
in the household of Louis Marcotte, in Bourbonnais, Illinois.
On this photo copy, I have crossed out the surmame Messier, which is written to the left side,
under his baptized, abreviated name Los.Achilles, and corrected it to Marcotte. Louis and
Julia were married in 1851, so the Messier name is just a clerical error. The baptism entry,
which was written in Latin, clearly indicates the parents as Louis Marcotte and Julia Messier.
The Latin entry uses given names Louis Achilles in latin, i.e.- Ludovicus Achilleus.
In English, the full paragraph translates as:
A.D. 1859 - On the third day of May, I baptized Louis Achilles Mmarcotte, born the
preceding day, son of Louis Marcotte and Julia Messier. The sponsors/Godparents were
Antoine Marcotte and Mathilda Marcotte.
The signature on all of the baptisms on the righthand page is by Ant. Mailloux, prtr.
(i.e.- Antoine Maillouxm priest)
